Finding Magic in Everyday Midlife Moments: How Hygge Brought Calm, Cozy, and a Little Whimsy Into My Life
Somewhere along the way in my 50s (and considering I’m only 51 at the time of writing this – March 2026 – we’re not talking a big time frame here 🤣) I realized something important: life doesn’t suddenly become magical just because we want it to. Sometimes we have to create the magic ourselves.
So I adopted a personal motto: “Find magic and create whimsy in everyday midlife moments.”

Now let me stop here for a sec… there’s a reason this whole personal motto thing came about. You see, I was soooo caught up in bitching about midlife and all that was happening (whacked out hormones, mood swings, body changes… the list goes on) that it was making me grumpy and miserable.
I didn’t like it. So I decided it was time to change the attitude and I knew to change the attitude I needed something fun. Something… well magical and whimsical that would put a smile on my face in all the midlife moments – everyday moments – mundane moments lol I was bitching about.
And that’s how the personal motto came to be. Okay, now back to what I started writing about…
One concept (that I didn’t know was a thing, actually, until I stumbled upon a video – probably on TikTok cause I spend way too much time on there but I digress) and they were using this weird word that made me giggle (because I’m childish like that 🤣): Hygge.
Pronounced hoo-gah, hygge is a Danish word that pretty much translates to a feeling of coziness, comfort, contentment, and emotional warmth.
If you want an official definition, not my interpreation, Merriam Webster Dictionary says this:
Hygge – Noun: a cozy quality that makes a person feel content and comfortable
Hygge – Adjective: invoking or fostering a sense of coziness, contentment, and well-being
It also is focused on togetherness – family and friends. For me, that’s not a big part of how I use/practice/incorporate/cultivate it (whatever the hell you do LMAO) because I like to spend quite a bit of time alone. Anywho…
It’s not something you buy or decorate with. It’s more of a vibe – a feeling you create in your everday life. In Denmark, the Danish have long used it to create comfort during long, dark winters. But honestly? You don’t need a snowstorm outside to enjoy it. Hygge is really about creating peaceful, cozy moments anytime you need them.
For me, embracing hygge has turned ordinary days into something… more relaxing, calming, and oh yeah definitely whimsy and magical 😜🌟.
Here are a few simple ways hygge can help you bring more calm, joy, and everyday magic into your home too.
Warm Lighting: The Instant Mood Changer
If there’s one quick way to shift the energy in a room, it’s lighting.
Hygge lighting is all about soft, warm, gentle glow rather than bright overhead lights that feel like a dentist’s office. Even before I knew what this Hygge was I have NEVER been able to stand bright lights – they bug my eyes (and even way more now as a woman of a certain age with failing eyesight lol)! I’ve always enjoyed softer, more ambient lighting. Oh and of course fairy lights.😜
Some easy ways to bring hygge lighting into your space:
1. Light a few candles in the evening – I am currently obsessed with these ones because they fit my She Room decor! 🤩Plus they are flameless which is a huge bonus! My other new favorite obsession is this – I have 3 in my house now (She Room, bathroom, and bedroom) 😲- because I get the yummy smell of my candles without the flame also!)

2. Add string lights around a bookshelf or window – I just added some to my She Room window to go along with my new curtains! Obsessed! (Yep, I’m obsessed with lots of shit right now. #sorrynotsorry)

3. Turn on a soft lamp instead of overhead lighting – my favorite, you guessed it… obsession is this lamp! It’s a bit pricey but it’s so cute & I didn’t pay for it out of pocket – it was a gift; Amazon Gift Card that is)

4. Use lanterns or tea lights on a coffee table – I’m currently not using either one of these options myself but they would make a great addition to your home.
For me, when the lighting is dimmer (softer), it just makes things feel calmer. And now reading a book, watching a show, or sipping tea doesn’t feel like something routine/normal but instead it just feels more relaxing, comfortable, and a bit magical. So now that normal thing has become a tiny magical ritual of comfort.
Speaking of sipping tea… look at this cozy tea corner I have in my She Room:

Yes, you guessed it – I’m OBSESSED 🤣
Cozy Textures Make Everything Better
Another element of hygge is physical comfort. We’re talking soft fabrics, layered textures (and I don’t even know what that means?!), and cozy corners that invite you to slow down and enjoy.
Here are some easy ways to incorporate this part of Hygge in your everday life:
Fluffy fuzzy throw blankets – there is no such thing as too many – just sayin’ 😜 My flamingo one has become a dog blanket (to cover the “couch” in my She Room – you’ll see it in a pic below) because the darling dog chewed holes in it the day I got it 🤬(he’s lucky he’s cute)!

Oversized sweaters – I personally prefer sweatshirts that have a soft material on the inside; I don’t do sweaters.
Soft pillows – have you seen the price of decorative pillows? Like who the hell wants to pay $20 for one pillow? Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little… but not much! I looked at some at my local Ross (or TJ Maxx or Home Goods or Marshall… I can’t remember because I love all those stores) and the 2 I found that I really liked were going to cost me over $25.
Say what?!
That’s a hell no!
Thankfully I have these two old things (seriously these are soooo old but they’re still comfy as hell – it feels like my head is resting on a bunch of marshmallows!):

Warm socks – oh yes! In the summer I’m not a fan of socks, but winter/colder months I love me some warm socks and the fuzzier the better.😍 I just ordered these fuzzy soft cozy socks to replace some of my old worn out ones.
A comfortable reading chair – currently lacking one of these and could kick myself for getting rid of my fave chair a few years ago! I’m on the hunt for another one though because as cute as this thing is, it is NOT comfortable at all; it has become what we now call an expensive dog bed! 🤦♀️

There’s something delightfully whimsical about building your own cozy spot on the couch/in a chair with a blanket(s), pillow(s), a warm drink, and nowhere you need to be… other than lost in a show you’re binging or escaping “reality” in a book that’s taken you into a whole new world. 🤩
These things all scream comfort and I’m at the age where I’ve decided comfort is no longer negotiable.
The Power of a Good-Smelling Home
One of the most underrated parts of hygge is scent.
Our sense of smell is deeply connected to memory and emotion – if you’re like me I bet there’s a scent that will immediately remind you of something; for me there are a few that transport me back to childhood and my grandma.
Want to change the mood of your home? Just like lighting can make a difference, scent can too. Here are a few simple ways to create a cozy atmosphere using scent:
1. Light a vanilla, cinnamon, or warm spice candle – I’m not a huge vanilla fan so I don’t do anything vanilla smelling!
2. Simmer orange peels, cloves, and cinnamon sticks on the stove – if you have never done this, run and do it NOW (obviously you have to have the ingredients so first step is to get them if you don’t lol). This is the most heavenly, magical smell ever! Seriously cannot put into words what this smells like! It’s sooooo good!
3. Bake something simple like banana bread or cookies – I mean YUM and you don’t have to twist my arm… and this is coming from the gal that can’t cook/bake worth a lick! Just thinking about the smell of warm banana bread has my mouth watering. 🤤
4. Use essential oils like lavender or cedarwood – If you have pets please make sure you know what ones are safe to be used around them because some are toxic!
When your home smells warm and inviting, it creates an environment that feels welcoming not just for you, but guests too.
Comfort Foods That Feel Like a Hug
No surprise here but Hygge also shows up in the kitchen. There’s something comforting about foods that simmer slowly, bake in the oven, or fill the house with delicious smells.
Some of my favorite cozy kitchen moments include:
- A pot of soup bubbling on the stove (now I’m thinking of my mom’s homemade chicken noodle soup!)
- Homemade bread fresh from the oven – there’s just something about this smell. I need my man to do some more homemade bread now that I’m thinking about it.
- Simple casseroles or slow-cooker meals – okay who am I kidding? I am all about the slow-cooker meals because again, your gal can’t cook and the crock-pot (I call it a crock-pot – am I the only one?) is pretty much ‘fool-proof’ when it comes to cooking a meal!
- Baking something sweet just because – when my son was little, as much as my cooking and baking skills lack, I liked to make chocolate chip cookies for him as an after school treat. I’d cheat and use the pre-made cookie dough stuff from the store but hey the smell was still heavenly even if they weren’t homemade (and tasted good too lol).
Cooking doesn’t have to be fancy to be hygge. I say the simpler it is, the better… especially for me and my lack of cooking skills LMAO
When it comes to food and hygge, it’s more about the feeling of nourishment and care for yourself and the people around you than the recipe/food itself.
Hygge Is Really About Connection
Hygge naturally encourages connection. And I mentioned it way back in the beginning but this is the part that doesn’t really “fit” for me. Unless it’s about connection to myself because the Hygge vibe I’ve set up is 99.9% all about my She Room where I like to spend alone time (as alone as you can be with 3 other adults living in the house).
But… if I were connecting with family and friends in my home, it sure wouldn’t be any sort of elaborate entertaining (in other words it would not be Pinterest-perfect lol)!
Hygge moments are usually simple, relaxed, and unpretentious. When I say unpretentious I simply mean things like:
- Sharing a meal with friends
- Laughing over coffee
- Playing games around the table
- Watching a movie under a pile of blankets (oooh this made me think of blanket forts! lol)
The goal is comfort and presence. And those are the moments that often become the ones we remember most!
Creating Whimsy in Everyday Life
What I didn’t expect when I discovered hygge was how much it would help me embrace my little midlife motto… or maybe the better way to say it would be that once I realized I was doing Hygge, I didn’t realize how much it would help me to lean even more into that motto I created.
As I’ve incorporated it into my life more and more, it’s made me realize something important that I think we often forget as middle-aged adults:
We need to slow down enough to notice the magic in ordinary moments.
Things like watching the flickering glow of candles (whether really using the flame of one or flameless ones) on a quiet evening alone, curling up with a cozy blanket and good book, or the smell of something delicious baking in the oven aren’t anything fancy or expensive or amazing…
But together, they help create a life that feels slower, calmer, cozy, and of course my fave – magical and whimsical! 😍
I don’t know about you, but this is exactly the kind of midlife (and beyond) I want – one filled with calm, coziness, and a bit of everyday magic and whimsy.
